Klein Constantia
Founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape—Klein Constantia was part of the original Constantia estate, chosen for its stunning beauty, decomposed granite soils, and cooling ocean breezes. Over centuries, the vineyard gained renown for producing the famed dessert wine Vin de Constance, adored by Napoléon, European royalty, and immortalised in literature by Austen and Dickens.
Set on 146 hectares—75 under vine—the estate sits on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, offering breathtaking views over False Bay and the Constantia Valley. Its climate and terrain allow for a clear expression of terroir in wines, particularly cool-climate varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and its legendary Vin de Constance.
Klein Constantia is a living bridge between history and excellence, where centuries-old heritage meets contemporary winemaking artistry. For those with refined taste and appreciation for legacy, it offers both remarkable wines and an atmosphere steeped in meaning.
Notable awards
In 2000, Klein Constantia was recognised as one of the "most mythical vineyards in the world," alongside legendary estates like Château d'Yquem.
