FRANSCHHOEK

"The Heart of the Winelands"

Franschhoek, meaning “French Corner,” was founded in 1688 when French Huguenot refugees settled in this fertile valley after fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They brought with them centuries of winemaking knowledge, which has shaped the Cape Winelands for more than 300 years. Today, this picturesque village, framed by dramatic mountains and lush vineyards, is celebrated as the culinary and wine capital of South Africa.

Guests can wander through historic wine estates, many of which still bear the names of the original Huguenot families, and taste vintages that consistently rank among the world’s best. The region offers everything from boutique family-run cellars to grand, historic domaines, each with its own story. The celebrated Franschhoek Wine Tram offers a leisurely way to experience the vineyards, rolling through the valley in true storybook style.

Beyond wine, Franschhoek has become synonymous with gastronomic excellence. The village is home to award-winning restaurants led by some of South Africa’s finest chefs, as well as chic cafés, artisanal chocolatiers, and vibrant food markets. Visitors can also enjoy boutique galleries, antique shops, and a thriving art scene, all adding to its charm.

Blending old-world charm with modern refinement, Franschhoek is a destination where heritage, gastronomy, and natural beauty converge. It is not just a place to taste world-class wines, but to immerse yourself in a lifestyle of elegance, culture, and indulgence, making it an essential part of any journey through the Cape Winelands.
